Why HP chose not to use AA size battery 
in the HP 41C calculator is a mystery.
Here are some AA size alkaline batteries next to the HP 41C calculator battery holder. Lengthwise, the AA battery is longer ( about 20mm ), width wise there seems to be some hope in camouflaging the buldge. Actually, the little increase in size of the calculator is not as critical as say the increase in size of a hearing aid.
AA size battery are cheaper than N size battery 
and their capacity is also higher. They are cheaper because there are more appliances using them than N size battery.
